Wellness

We all want to make sure our four-legged companions are healthy, especially if we're planning on getting on their backs and trusting them to carry us.  At BVS, we recognize that each horse is as individual as their owner, and strive to learn what makes each of them "tick." A vaccine program coupled with a yearly basic physical examination can help prevent problems with your horse, or catch developing problems early enough so that they don't become big ones.

Barrow Veterinary Offers:

  • Vaccinations (See our Client Education page for more information)
  • Digital Coggins via Global VetLink
  • Nutritional Consultations
  • Dental Exams (See Below)
  • Fecal Egg Counts and customized deworming strategies

Dentistry

Annual dental examinations are as important for your horse as they are for you and me.  While a horse doesn't necessarily need floating yearly, it is important to assess the mouth to catch abnormalities early and prevent future problems.  Check out this document for some more information on how to recognize if your horse has a dental problem.

Dr. Barrow enjoys dentistry and not only makes sure your horse is orally sound for purposes of wellness, but can also let you know if your horse's teeth are the reason he might not be responding so well to that bit....

Reproduction

BVS works in conjunction with the Burchett Equine Center in Social Circle, GA, a premier breeding facility for over 20 years.  Together with Earl and Phyllis Burchett, we can make sure your foal gets a safe and healthy start, breed or re-breed your mare, or stand your stallion.

  • BEC boasts large foaling stalls, safe and roomy paddocks, custom-made breeding stocks and collection dummies, an in-house laboratory, and on-premises breeding managers.  Other assisted reproduction programs include freezing and storage of semen and an embryo transfer program.
  • Foal watch is done every two hours, 24 hours a day.  Mares in the program are checked every other day with ultrasound and detailed records are kept by BTC.  Foals are brought in with their dams and have their own safe area while the mares are assessed.
  • Stallions are exercised regularly to keep their body condition, and are always handled by experienced staff.

If you just want to better manage your mare's estrus cycle during the show season, we can help you with that, too.  Just ask us for more information.

Lameness/Sports Medicine

No foot, no horse.  BVS offers comprehensive lameness exams and can provide the latest technology in diagnostics and treatment.  Dr. Barrow has had a special interest in this area for more than ten years, and is always on the cutting edge of what's new in soundness and sports medicine therapies.

  • Digital Radiography
  • Diagnostic Ultrasound
  • Regenerative Medicine, including IRAP and PRP
  • Podiatry assessments, including corrective and therapeutic shoeing
  • Prepurchase examinations
  • Endoscopy
Digital Radiography can be especially useful with Podiatry assessments.  Below is an example of a front foot before and after corrective shoeing on the same day.  Note how the corrective shoeing changes the weight bearing angle of the bony column.  The shoe was placed back farther on the foot and a wedge-type shoe was applied.  This decreases the amount of stress on the tendons and ligaments along the back of the pastern and foot and also eases breakover.
